I had asked my sister Carmen, the late supervisor for Ventura County’s 5th district, for many years why she didn’t run for office once her opinions against the death penalty derailed the possibility of a judgeship. Early on I knew my sister had so much to offer in public service. I knew she would bring her heart and intellect to serve the greater good.
I cannot adequately express my love and pride for my sister, but I must tell you that Carmen did not like the idea of running for office — the asking for support (money), the campaigning. She avoided it for decades, in my opinion. But when her community needed a social justice warrior, she became that social justice warrior for her community. She put aside the inconveniences to her life, the distaste for fundraising and she even overcame the distaste for the focus on her as the candidate.
It took courage, but she stepped up. At first, she failed, but then she was there working her heart, soul and intellect for the community she loved, the community she was a part of, the community that she knew needed a course correction.
Today we need another course correction as we see the less-privileged Lemonwood neighborhood of District 3 become a sacrifice zone to the fossil fuel industry. We need another justice warrior for that community.
